The story the expansion pack tells is compelling, if not for the tale itself as much as it is due to its strong cast of characters. All Saints’ Day is beautiful to watch and a stroll in the vineyards is more pleasant than one imagines, but it is all the same, in the end, a Witcher story, and it comes with all the dark imagery and morbid whimsy you would expect. However, don’t take any of this to mean that Blood and wine forget what made The Witcher 3 so damn good in the first place, with its tense atmosphere, dark humor, and sharp writing. After hours and hours of harsh, brutal base game tone, Blood and Wine feels like a breath of fresh air. It breaks completely with The Witcher 3 base game in the most daring way possible, and it’s for the best.

The Toussaint region may be the best thing of all Blood and wine. “From the first fifteen minutes, you leave the dark and brutal landscapes of The Witcher 3 and enter a whole new area, unlike anything you’ve ever seen in this series. The sun is shining here, the people are sharp and chivalrous, and there is an overall undercurrent that is much happier than what fans of the show might be used to. Toussaint is full of magnificent vineyards, picturesque landscapes and grand palaces and estates. Blood and wine takes you to Toussaint, a particularly French region in its flavors and styles. No more Velen swamps, no more the urban mess known as Novigrad, no more the austere and sinister mountains of Skellige.

Tonally, in terms of writing and in terms of visual style, the game is made, among other things, Blood and wine forges its own identity, totally independent of the base game and the Hearts of stone DLC, so much so that developers CD Projekt RED could easily have released this expansion pack as a separate game from the series.įrom the first fifteen minutes, you leave the dark and brutal landscapes of The Witcher 3 and enter an entirely new area, unlike anything you’ve ever seen in this series.
